Withania Somnifera

    Properties of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha Withania Somnifera is an essential herb in India and Africa as a traditional remedy and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over two thousand years. It belongs to the Solanaceae family and its name, which means horse in Sanskrit, evokes the strength and revitalising properties that this natural ingredient provides. Also nicknamed "winter cherry”, Indian ginseng or Physalis flexuosa, Ashwagandha is a plant with beneficial properties.

Its very powerful active ingredients[1] are concentrated in its root, the richest part of the plant. The fortifying root of Ashwagandha is best known for promoting sleep, physical and intellectual well-being. It provides support in times of nervous tension and anxiety.

The bioactive components of Ashwagandha are numerous and help strengthen the immune system. This plant is rich in antioxidants: flavonoids including catechin, steroidal alkaloids (somnine, somniferine), phytosterols (withanolides, β-sitosterol)[2] and also contains lactones with anti-inflammatory properties (withaferin A), sitoindosides with anti-stress activity as well as pyrazole alkaloids with relaxing effects. Ashwagandha is now widely studied scientifically for its various withanolides[3], phytoactive principles discovered in 1962, and of which the root of the plant contains more than thirty.

Ashwaghanda is also effective in promoting good digestion thanks to its trace elements and antioxidants (stress being a factor in digestive dysfunctions). Ashwagandha also contains trace elements including iron and essential amino acids, such as L-tryptophan. Linoleic (omega 6) and linolenic (omega 3) fatty acids are also found in this root.

Ashwagandha is a plant that adapts to the needs of the body while fighting against stress. It regulates the nervous system, sleep cycles and balances major physiological functions. Considered a plant panacea, Ashwaghanda gently reduces the aggressions of the body, fortifies the body during convalescences and naturally generates better tonus. It is therefore particularly indicated during periods of overextertion and for nocturnal relaxation.
