Ginkgo Biloba L.

    Properties of ginkgo biloba

A tree belonging to one of the oldest botanical families, the ginkgoaceae, ginkgo biloba already existed in prehistoric times. The adjective "biloba” associated with the name of the ginkgo tree comes from the two-lobed structure of its leaves. Exceptional for its longevity, ginkgo breaks life span records and can live more than three thousand years. Its species is said to be panchronic because ginkgo biloba still exists but its morphology is similar to so-called extinct fossil species.

Ginkgo biloba, on the other hand, has extraordinary resistance to pests, frost and environmental pollution; this fascinating tree in fact survived Hiroshima. Also called "silver apricot", ginkgo biloba is seldom found in its natural state and was introduced to Europe in the 18th century from Asia. Source of legends in Japan, ginkgo biloba is also called in this country "tree of the pagodas" in reference to its leaves.

A traditional raw material in Chinese medicine, ginkgo biloba has long been used for its medicinal properties, in particular to fight against senility, asthma and bronchitis. Indeed, we now know that its leaves contain ginkgolides and bilobalides, terpenoids, sesquiterpene lactones and especially flavonoids that promote blood circulation. These active components have many health benefits thanks to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Substances from the leaves of ginkgo biloba, for example, have been shown to reduce premenstrual syndromes and anxiety, improve brain function and reduce sexual dysfunction, according to some research. Ginkgo biloba leaves are currently an important ingredient in the flourishing market for health-claiming food supplements and herbal teas, mostly for blood circulation disorders.

Species and parts of ginkgo biloba used

At Natural Origins, we only use ginkgo biloba leaves. Composed of two palm-shaped lobes, its leaves are deciduous.

In autumn, the golden foliage of ginkgo biloba is renowned for its beauty; a fascinating tree that can grow up to thirty meters tall, which does not produce flowers. In May, catkins are produced, constituting the male part of the tree. Ginkgo biloba does not actually produce flowers, but pairs of flower parts grouped together. Its ripe fruits are orange-yellow and give off an unpleasant odour.
