Properties of devil's claw / harpagophytum

Harpagophytum is now used to fight inflammation and painful joints. Traditionally used for centuries in southern Africa, the plant is known to relieve muscle and joint pain as well as digestive disorders, urinary tract infections, ulcers and blood diseases.
Numerous studies have identified powerful active ingredients and confirmed the therapeutic potential of harpagophytum. Harpagoside, harpagid and procumbid are three compounds of the plant and are today known to possess anti-inflammatory activity. Some studies also attribute to them an antioxidant, analgesic, anti-diabetes, anticancer, uterotonic, anticonvulsant and cardioprotective potential.
The benefits of harpagophytum are also recognized by various health authorities. The European Scientific Cooperation in Phytotherapy (ESCOP) has recognized since 2016 the traditional use of this plant in the symptomatic treatment of painful osteoarthritis, back pain, loss of appetite and digestive disorders. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) also published in 2016 a monograph on the species Harpagophytum procumbens / Harpagophytum zeyheri Decne, recognizing the traditional use of this plant to relieve minor joint pain and digestive disorders.

Origin and quality of devil's claw / harpagophytum

Natural Origins has been certified since 2007 with its hapagophytum "FFL" chain in Namibia. Harpagophytum organic harvesting is part of a sustainable development approach by preserving the quality of the soil, air and water. Thus, the company participates in the preservation of plant and animal biodiversity. The objective is also to ensure decent working conditions, sustainable jobs with collectors and to create infrastructures for the local population, the essential values of fair trade. Reapers are retained by relying on the annual income to reward their collecting efforts in the bush. This also makes it possible to sensitize them each year to good harvesting practices, contributing to the protection of the resource. The "FFL" label is a guarantee of quality by guaranteeing the safety of the end consumer thanks to demanding controls on the conditions of harvest, storage, transport of raw materials and preservation of natural resources through sustainable agricultural practices. In addition, Natural Origins has been audited and certified in 2020 according to the control procedures of the FFL program as part of the Fair Trade and Responsible Supply-Chains certification program. This audit was carried out as fair trade partner / intermediate trader for the Harpagophytum supply chain in Namibia and the company achieved a performance of 84.4% vs 82.3% in 2019 and 5 leaves, the highest degree of FFL certification.
